Circle Of Excellence "Start by imagining a circle about one foot in front of you. In that circle are all the positive attributes that will help you to achieve excellence (in your sport). Toss into the circle all the words that you associate with excellence: "successful", being relaxed", "calm", "focused", "powerful", "proud", "confident", "self-assured", "an achiever". (Pause) Excellent. Now think back to a time when you felt truly excellent. Maybe it's a recent time or some time from childhood... whenever it is, you're feeling excellent about something. It can be academic, artistic or something related to your work. (Pause) Good. Now I want you to remember how you looked. What is the expression on your face? Are you smiling? Notice how you are standing, check out your posture. What are you saying to yourself? How are others relating to you when you are truly excellent? How do you relate to them? Maybe you feel 10 feet tall! Maybe you feel you have the world in the palm of your hands. What's that like? How are you breathing? How is your heart beating? Where does that source of confidence and pride lie in your body? Is it in your chest? Is it in your stomach? Somewhere else? Touch that area where your confidence and pride lives in your body. (Pause) Good. What are you wearing when you are at your absolute best? See it now in your mind's eye. (Pause) Perhaps there is a color that you associate with excellence.... place that color in the circle. Make all the images sharper... brighten up the colors! Now I want you to add sound to your circle... perhaps a theme song or bit of instrumental music that inspires you. Maybe it's just a hum that emanates from the circle. Bravo! Now I want you to step into your circle of excellence and feel all the feelings, sensations and emotions... Feel it, see it, and hear it. Be overcome with it... enjoy it... embrace your power.... your excellence! Now while you are in this state of excellence I want you to repeat your word of power. Saying the word "___________" is a trigger for you to enter into a state of excellence - relaxed, receptive, focused, powerful, filled with pride, confidence and calm self-assurance." "Perhaps there is a gesture, such as clasping your hand or arm, that will help you feel your power. Every time you do this gesture, you remember this feeling of empowerment. Good!" Future Scenario: "Now, I will count to 3... 1, you will be able to return to this state easily, whenever it is appropriate. 2, you will find it easy to remember everything you need to remember. 3, you will open your eyes, feeling alert and refreshed, and empowered!" Summary: Any time you wish to be in this state, remember your word of power, gesture, color, music, etc.
